Why only drivers you ask?! – because good reliable drivers are the hardest to find!
…everyone else can go jump in a lake.
…All kidding aside, here are some great tips.
Many of these come from our good friend Steve Hurewitz who has been a master at managing fleet operations for years!
1. Dispatchers
Your dispatchers are at the front lines of any fleet operation. Make sure they start the day with a “Good Morning” or a pleasant greeting to your drivers.
2. Suggestion box
Place a suggestion box where drivers can drop in their ideas. Showing them that you care about their thoughts and opinions is a great way to show you value them.
3. Share your success
When business is good give out $10 gift cards to show that you care and appreciate their hard work.
4. Start Up meetings
At the start of every season or after a vacation break, hold a Start Up meeting with a relaxed atmosphere and a nice spread. It’s a good time to share your thoughts and concerns and to set a positive tone for the weeks ahead
5. Make use of your cameras
If your vehicles have cameras , put them to good use!
Let the drivers know that as you were reviewing camera footage, you noticed that they’re doing a great job! – and maybe even say it if they weren’t!
There is nothing like positive reinforcement to bring out the best in everyone!
6. Company BBQ
At the start of every summer, have a casual BBQ and maybe even a softball game!
It’s a chance for everyone to relax and build a sense of camaraderie
7. Communication
Always have open lines of communication for your drivers. When they are upset about something or want to talk, be sure to give them your undivided attention.
8. Reward
Reward good driving behavior.
A $10 gift card once a year for no accidents or tickets, is a solid strategy for making sure they stay with your company.
9. Safety meetings
When calling a safety meeting, be sure to include a allotted time for driver’s gripes!
Aside for getting maximum attendance at the meetings, it gives a chance for driver’s concerns to be heard.
10. Keep yourself busy and happy
Your mood has a direct effect on the people who work under you and it will trickle down to the drivers. Before making sure your drivers are happy, make sure YOU are happy!
If you don’t have cameras to help with tip number five don’t fret. You can keep your drivers happy with the other nine suggestions.
