Your Fleet as a Marketing Tool

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned in marketing,  was when our company was commissioned by an outside, hi-tech company to install their product on a large fleet of buses.  The product  – which tracked fuel consumption – was intended to save the bus company money – but was so far ahead of it’s times that it never worked!   Well back to the drawing board for them! – and no bother for us.  We got paid for our work and the bus company was refunded their money.

What I DID gain from the project was a valuable lesson in marketing. You see the image these buses portray to the outside onlooker, is that this company is the paradigm of  21st century culture.  An example of everything that defines the best of American capitalism. We the installers however became privy to a dark little  secret of theirs. – Their fleet is outdated and falling apart – and they don’t care!
The motto of their mechanics must have been “keep it on the road another day!”

Now I am not here to debate the pros and cons of operating a business like this.  I would  imagine that for them, they were making so much money anyhow that it made little difference.

What I am going to say is that every vehicle was wrapped with graphics that shouted out “SUCCESS”. Not in a busy desperate way, but where one could see that some great minds in marketing had used it as their canvas to get out a powerful message.  And so there you have it. There’s nothing wrong with taking care of internals, but don’t forget that the ultimate success of many businesses is how they are perceived from a distance!

We can’t help you with  marketing but if you are considering using technology that does work to save your company money,  here is a great crash course on Vehicle Camera Systems and whether they are the right fit for your business
